In Illinois, it is mandatory for individuals to obtain a license in barbering before providing services for a fee.
1500 – Course Outline
General Theory (150 Hours)
This section covers various topics including barber history, bacteriology, infection control, implements, tools, and equipment, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, electricity and light therapy, properties, disorders, and treatments of the hair, skin, and scalp, facial and scalp massage, shaving and facial hair design, haircutting and styling, chemical texture services, hair color and lightening, barbershop management, and Illinois law and rules.
Practical Application (1350 Hours)
Bacterial and infection control focuses on practical sanitation and sterilization techniques. Haircutting and styling teach techniques for various men’s hairstyles, including pompadours, tapers, and fades. Shaving and facial hair design include traditional and modern shaving techniques, as well as beard and mustache styling. Chemical texture services cover perming, relaxing, and other chemical treatments. Hair coloring and lightening involve color chemistry and application, along with grey coverage techniques. Facial and scalp massage offers techniques for relaxation and skin health. Electricity and light therapy involve the use of electrical equipment in treatments. Barbershop management covers business management skills, client relations, building a clientele, retailing, and product sales. Anatomy and physiology focus on understanding the body’s structure and functions related to barbering. Implements, tools, and equipment involve the usage and maintenance of barbering tools. Lastly, barber history explores the evolution of barbering practices and styles.
